What we look for
Three things, on every photo and every listing
These are the categories the automatic checks are trained on. Plenty of other things are not allowed either — those are handled by review and by reports.
Nudity or sexual content
Photos showing nudity or sexual content, and listings whose wording refers to it, are taken off the public site pending review. This applies to anything visible in the picture, including items in the background.
Illegal drugs
Photos showing illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia, and listings whose wording refers to it, are taken off the public site pending review. This applies to anything visible in the picture, including items in the background.
Alcohol
Photos showing alcohol, and listings whose wording refers to it, are taken off the public site pending review. This applies to anything visible in the picture, including items in the background.

What happens to a picture
Photos are checked one at a time, in the background, the moment they are uploaded.
You upload
Your photo goes onto your listing immediately and you see it straight away, marked as being checked. The check usually finishes within seconds.
It is checked
An image model looks at the picture for the three categories above. It is never shown to a person at this stage, and no decision is final.
If it fails
The photo stops being visible to buyers on the website and the app straight away. Nothing is deleted at this point. Your listing stays on sale with your other photos, and moderation is alerted.

What happens to a title or description
The words in your listing are checked whenever you create or edit it.
Title and descriptions
Your listing title, short description and full description are checked against our list of words that are not allowed on the marketplace.
If something matches
The listing stays on sale and moderation is alerted. A word on its own is not proof of anything: "wine glasses" and "wine, 12 bottles" contain the same word.
A person reads it
Someone reads the actual listing, not just the word that matched. They either close it with no effect on you, ask you to change the wording, or remove the listing.
What you see as a seller
- Your own photos are always visible to you, even ones buyers cannot see. A hidden photo is greyed out and labelled, so you know which one to replace.
- An email explains which category was involved and what to do. It never quotes the exact word that matched.
- Fix the photo or the wording and save. It is checked again immediately.
If we get it wrong
Automatic checks are not perfect and we do not pretend otherwise. A bottle of cooking wine, a pharmacy shelf, a set of cocktail glasses: these have all been flagged in testing and none of them break any rule.
That is exactly why a flag is never the end of it. Reply to the email you were sent and a person will look again. If they agree with you, your photo goes straight back onto the listing and nothing is held against your account.

We do not publish the list of blocked words or the confidence levels the image checks use. Publishing them would mostly help the people trying to get around them. If you believe a rule has been applied to you wrongly, reply to the email we sent and a person will look at it.
Selling something ordinary? You will never notice any of this.
These checks exist so that the marketplace stays somewhere people are happy to shop. For the vast majority of listings they run and pass in seconds.
